Priority Issues
Working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)… HCPA provided comments on two proposed test methods and associated testing guidance for evaluating antimicrobial pesticides against two biofilm bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. The division’s members and staff remain engaged with the agency as the methods are finalized.
In March, HCPA provided extensive comments to EPA on two proposed test methods and associated testing guidance for evaluating the effectiveness of antimicrobial pesticides against Clostridium difficile. In September, EPA then released the “Methods and Guidance for Testing the Efficacy of Antimicrobial Products Against Spores of Clostridium difficile on Hard Non-Porous Surfaces.” HCPA continues to work with EPA until the guidance is finalized.
EPA’s antimicrobial division staff and HCPA staff held sharing sessions that proved extremely useful for new staff in both organizations. The first session in January covered: Product Ideas and Concepts; The Parts of a Formulation; Formula Development; and EPA Testing: Efficacy, Acute Toxicology, & Chemistry. A second successful session was held in June covering the importance of Interactions with EPA regions and regulators in other countries; State Regulations; Drivers for Formulation Changes and Retail Requirements.
