The Household & Commercial Products Association’s (HCPA) Mid-Year meeting, IMPACT2018, concluded on Friday, May 18, at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Maryland.

The conference brought together more than 300 of the most influential leaders from the household and commercial products industry, drawn by the conference’s exclusive networking events, advocacy opportunities, keynote speakers, and exceptional educational content.

“Never before have HCPA members had so many options and so much access to key influencers at the Mid-Year Meeting,” said Steve Caldeira, President and CEO of HCPA. “The addition of new regulatory, legal and public affairs tracks, as well as the first HCPA Legislative Day on Capitol Hill, added new depth and value to already very strong Product Division programming. Many members shared that they’ll be bringing additional company colleagues.”

The lineup of thought leaders keynoting IMPACT2018 included Matthew Dowd, chief political analyst for ABC News; Jonathan Capehart, Pulitzer prize-winning journalist, Washington Post Opinion Writer and MSNBC contributor; Nancy Beck, Deputy Assistant Administrator for EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP), Margaret Sheppard, Lead Environmental Protection Specialist, (SNAP) Program, US EPA/Stratospheric Protection Division; and Chris Bender, Vice President of the Public Affairs Council.

Held in conjunction with IMPACT2018 was EPA’s Safer Choice Partner Summit, the first in-person UL WERCS Advisory Council meeting, and HCPA’s first-ever Air Care Summit.

The Mid-Year Meeting opened on Monday night with a welcome reception co-hosted by EPA’s Safer Choice Partner Summit. HCPA members were able to hear directly from the EPA about the future of the Safer Choice Program and meet with their supplier partners who were also at the event. Among the many developments at the Summit, a coalition to support the program was announced (an idea originally proposed by HCPA), and attendees discussed the pros and cons of the idea to use the Safer Chemical Ingredients List (SCIL) as an initial way to identify the 20 low priority chemicals required for review under the Lautenberg Act.

Also co-located with IMPACT2018 was a meeting held by the UL WERCS Advisory Council, which brings together senior executives from 3M, CVS Health, Givaudan, KAO, Lowes, Pfizer, Procter & Gamble, RB, SC Johnson, Target, Turtle Wax, Walmart and HCPA to collaborate on ways to improve the WERCSmart system, a program that connects manufacturers with retailers to meet critical compliance and safety needs.

“The Advisory Council offers a unique forum for retailers, suppliers and UL to discuss retailer information needs before they are implemented,” said Jim Jones, HCPA Executive Vice President, Strategic Alliances & Industry Relations. “The four-hour meeting addressed a number of critical topics, and also raised emerging issues that HCPA members need to be aware of.”

HCPA’s inaugural Air Care Summit was held on Friday by the Air Care Reputation Task Force, a subcommittee of HCPA’s Air Care Product Division.

In this first-of-its-kind Summit, the attendees and an independent science advisory panel heard from multidisciplinary experts who presented peer reviewed research that supports the benefits of fragrance and malodor removal and the ability of Air Care products to improve the quality of life for consumers and workers.

“As stewards of the household and commercial products that help consumers and workers to lead cleaner, healthier and more productive lives, HCPA and its members will continue to proactively conduct and share credible science, as well as correct misinformation related to household and commercial products and their ingredients,” said Caldeira. “This is the first time we have brought together medical, scientific and industry experts to consider the years of research in such a transparent setting and we will continue to do so.”

The Mid-Year Meeting also hosted working meetings for the seven HCPA Product Divisions, and most notably the Cleaning Products and Floor Care Divisions held a joint program focused on “Automation Innovation in Cleaning and Floor Care”. The Pest Management Division Program took full advantage of their proximity to EPA regulators and provided an “Update on Pyrethroid Re-Registration Activities” with both EPA and industry perspectives, while the Antimicrobial program featured senior staff from the EPA’s Antimicrobial Division. A late addition to the IMPACT2018 schedule exceeded all expectations with a packed room for the “Ingredient Disclosure: Implementation.”
