Dr. Steven Bennett Appointed to EPA Science Advisory Committee on Chemicals (SACC)

Dr. Steve Bennett, vice president, scientific affairs at the Household & Commercial Products Association (HCPA), has been appointed to serve on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Science Advisory Committee on Chemicals (SACC). Bennett will join 10 other new members to the committee that was established under the amended Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), or the “Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act,” or LSCA.

Steve will bring valuable industry insights and a reasoned, common-sense approach to the table that I know will be highly valued by the EPA,” said Steve Caldeira, president and CEO of HCPA. “Dr. Bennett’s deep expertise and collaborative leadership style will be an asset to the EPA and industry in our shared and dedicated mission of developing safe products for consumers and workers.”
The SACC is made up of a wide range of scientists from government, labor, public health, public interest, animal protection, and industry. The SACC will contribute counsel for risk assessments, methodologies, and pollution prevention measures as the EPA implements TSCA. Candidates are identified through public nominations, and Dr. Bennett will serve on the committee for a 3-year term that runs through March 2021.
At HCPA, Dr. Bennett leads HCPA’s scientific affairs department, developing science-based policies and positions, providing scientific guidance on a wide range of issues primarily focused on formulated products. He is currently leading the association’s TSCA implementation efforts, especially prioritization and risk evaluation of existing chemicals. He manages the Floor Care Division, HCPA Consumer Product Ingredients Dictionary, the association’s product stewardship initiative, Product Care® and co-manages the Pest Management Products Division.
Prior to joining HCPA, Dr. Bennett worked as a scientist and chemist for E.A. Engineering, was a university professor, and continues to lecture in the Environmental Sciences and Policy Master’s Program at Johns Hopkins University. He is a member of American Chemistry Society and the Society for Risk Assessment.
